The second largest Fabergé egg known, this egg recalls "singing bird" snuffboxes popular in Switzerland in the early 19th century.
A rooster emerges from under the grille at the top, bobbing its head, flapping its wings, and crowing the hour. A similar Fabergé creation in pink enamel is also recorded. It is not certain which of the two was actually made for the imperial family and which for another wealthy client.
