Steve Eugene Abbott

Steve Abbott



Born in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bisexual writer, he studied at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln (1962-66). In 1969 he married Barbara Binder. The couple had a daughter, Alysia, born on december 6, 1970. With his wife's encouragement, Abbott "came out" and became involved in the gay liberation movement.

In august 1973, his wife Barbara got killed in a car accident. The same year Abbott also lost his first gay lover, who was killed by an AWOL marine. He was also a single father and many of his early poems reflected on his relationship with his young daughter. Abbott died of Aids-related complications, in San Francisco.
