Ann Aldrich's real name is Marijane Meaker. She produced a series of works from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s on lesbian life. As the titles of her works show, she offered a rather depressed and depressing image of lesbians as inhabiting a lonely, beset world. Such a portrayal was of course not uncommon - indeed, the lesbian classic The Well of Loneliness might be said to be its precursor.
In the repressive atmosphere of 1950s USA the pessimistic tone of Aldrich's work is not surprising. Her writing include We Walk Alone through Lesbos' Lonely Groves (1955), We, too, Must Love (1958), We Two Won't Last (1963) and the collection of short stories Carol in a Thousand Cities (1960).
She also writes as M.E.Kerr (gay and straight teenage books) and Vin Packer (also vintage paperbacks).
