Dorothy Allison
Writer

Dorothy AllisonAllison grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, where she and her sister suffered poverty, incest and abuse. She received popular and critical acclaim for Bastard Out of Carolina, a novel which was nominated for the American National Book Award. In her own words, Allison suggests that this novel "became, ultimately, the way to claim my family's pride and tragedy, and the embattled sexuality I fashioned on a base of violence and abuse."

The 1966 film, Bastard Out of Carolina, was adapted from a screenplay written by Allison and Ann Meredith. The film became embroled in a censorship debate when Ted Turner, who financed the film, decided not to air it on his TV network because of its graphic subject matter.

Her short stories won her two Lambda Literary Awards for Best Small Press and Best Lesbian Books.
