Timothy J. Anderson
Timoty Anderson
(? - living) Canada

Writer, libretist and bariton

It's going to seem odd, but there are two Timothy J. Andersons! And we know about each other and have exchanged a few e-mails. So you have the trucker/writer already, and I thought it was time to introduce you to the other one.

Up in Alberta, the province where Brokeback Mountain was filmed, there is another writer named Timothy J. Anderson. And there is a connection to the film.

Timothy J. Anderson, born at Dollard des Ormeaux, is a graduate of the Carleton School of Journalism and is a professional writer for both television and the stage. He has also worked as an editor and has been a librettist-in-residence with the Canadian Opera Company.

Openly bisexual and in a long-term committed relationship with another bisexual, Timoty Andersonthis Timothy J. Anderson is principally a playwright, but back in 1996 his first volume of poetry, Neurotic Erotica, was published by River/Slipstream Books and ignored. Ignored until a year later when a right-wing anti-GLBT magazine (Alberta Report) took exception to the book and used the book as a justification to call for an end to government support for the arts, especially for literary publishing. The book became a focus for conservative politicians both provicially and federally.

The Alberta government developed a policy that projects would not be censored for content (as long as they were not deemed legally obscene, at any rate) and that publishers would be funded on the basis of their overall program, not on a book-by-book basis. The same policy was subsequently put in place when the film development office was created.

So when Brokeback Mountain was having trouble finding backers, it came to Alberta. And the Alberta government approved it without regard to the content because the policy had already been established that the film could not be rejected on the basis of the content. What mattered was the credentials of the artistic team and the viability of the project. And this was due in part to the earlier furor over Timothy J. Anderson's book.

The author's next book, Resisting Adonis (Tesseract Books, 2000) was a novel set in a future dystopian United North America and has at its heart a gay male love story.

Since then, he's been doing more writing for stage, including a Sterling Award nomination for his play The Favourite. The story is based on the lives of the mignons who were intimate with Henri III of France. The show is now under revision and will be Timothy's MFA thesis project (completion date April 2007).

In 2005, Timothy J. Anderson was awarded a sterling Province of Alberta Centennial Medallion for his achievements in arts and advocacy by Liberal Member of the Legistlative Assembly Laurie Blakeman.

His story Newbie Wrangler, originally in Tesseracts9, was selected for Year's Best Fantasy 6 (Tachyon Press, eds David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer).

Timothy grew up in Montreal and now lives in Edmonton. In addition to his literary career, he is an active performer. A classically trained baritone, he has sung in opera, oratorio and musicals as well as acting in non-musical work. He can be heard on several recordings, including the Canadian original cast recording of Andrew-Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera (Polygram 1992; this has now been re-released, I believe) and most recently Mrs. Widder's Soiree Musicale - Toronto 1844.

Timothy has spoken on writing and publishing in Australia, Greece, and the US. His performing career has included shows across much of Canada, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong.
