Charles Robert Ashbee
(1863 - 1942) U.K.
Architect
Designer, architect and writer, one of the major figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. Basing his ideas on the social function of art from the writings of William Morris and John Ruskin. Ashbee founded a "Guild of Handicraft" in the East End of London in 1888 (later moved to Glouchestershire).
At its peak, the guild employed over 100 craftworkers. The guild satisfied Ashbee's philanthropic aims in promoting handmade articles in an environment where emotional fulfilment was more important than profit. The Guild finally collapsed for lack of demand in 1908.
