Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, John earned a degree in journalism from Drake University in Iowa and an MFA in film from the Peter Stark program at the University of Southern California. John has a weekly screenwriting column on IMDb (Internet Movie Database), in the "Ask a Filmmaker" section of indie.imdb.com. He also maintains a screenwriting-oriented website at johnaugust.com.
John August's screenwriting credits include Go, Big Fish, Titan A.E., Charlie's Angels (2000), and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). When he was tapped to write the modern adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it was revealed that he had never seen the original 70s movie-musical featuring Gene Wilder. Upon asking Tim Burton if he had should see it before going ahead with his work, Burton responded with a resolute "Definitely Not!!!".
The September 25, 2000 draft of the screenplay for Jurassic Park III (2001) credits revisions to John August. He is not credited in the final film. His current projects include Tarzan, and Corpse Bride.
He lives in Los Angeles, and has a daughter with his partner, Mike.
