(18 May 1934 - living) U.S.A.
Don Bachardy was born in Los Angeles in 1934. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and the Slade School of Art in London. His first one-man exhibition was held in October, 1961 at the Redfern Gallery in London.
Don met writer Christopher Isherwood when Isherwood was 48 and Bachardy 18. They were inseparable until Isherwood died 32 years later. An accomplished artist, Bachardy is perhaps best known for portraits of his lover.
Don is a celebrated American portrait artist, and he was the partner of writer Christopher Isherwood ("A Single Man", "Christopher and His Kind", "Goodbye to Berlin"). The legendary relationship between Bachardy and Isherwood began on Valentine's Day 1953, when Bachardy was eighteen and Isherwood was forty-eight; the two remained together until Isherwood's death in 1986.
