James was born and brought up in Boston. He studied German at High School - mainly - so he says - because he fancied the German teacher.
As an actor he has played in everything from Shakespeare to Jean Genet ( appearing as Solange in "The Maids").
His two most famous roles are as Laureen Bacall in "Laureen Bacall: By Herself" and as Marlene Dietrich in "Black Market Marlene", which he wrote and researched himself.
