Umberto BindiBorn in Genoa, he co-wrote You're My World and . His songs, outside Italy, have been recorded by Dionne Warwick, Dalida, Glen Campbell, Dusty Springfield and Tom Jones.

He was gay and didn't hide it, and this was a scandal in the 60s. He founded the "Genoa school" of "cantautori" (= singer-songwriters) that, starting with him, continues with Fabrizio De André, Gino Paoli and others. Just a little before his death he received the benefits of the "Bacchelli law", assisting elder artists in financial need. But it was too late - in fact for a long time he was ill and poverty stricken.

Umberto Bindi payd the scandal he aroused declaring publicly his homosexuality, with being emarginated notwithstanding his value as a singer-songwriter. Only his lover Massimo Artesi remained at his side and assisted him to his very last breath. Bindi died at Rome hospital from heart disease, aged 70.
