Born in Dublin, Elizabeth Dorothea Cole Bowen, had to deal with the death of her mother during childhood and an emotionally unstable mother. Her marriage in 1923 to Alan Cameron provided the material and emotional stability that enabled her writing career. In 1930 she inherited the family home in County Cork.

Bowen was apparently very attractive to other women, among them May Sarton, who enjoyed a brief romantic encounter and a very long friendship with Bowen.

Among her of short stories there are: Encounters (1923), with Look at all those Roses (1941), The Demon lover (1945), and others. Her novels include Friends and Relations (1931), The Death of the Heart (1938), The Heat of the Day (1949), and The Little Girls (1964).

The Little Girls is probably the book of Bowen's best known to lesbian readers.
