Gerd Brantenberg
(1941 - living) Norway
Novelist and activist
Brantemberg was born in Oslo, but grew up in the coastal town of Fredriksstad in south-eastern Norway. She graduated from the University of oslo with a degree in English language and literature in 1970, and then worked as a high school teacher for several years, before she made her literary debut in 1973. She has been a full-time writer since 1982.
Her true-to-life books on the theme of lesbian life and awakening have undoubtedly contributed greatly to the self-confidence of two generations of lesbians and gay men, in Norway as well as in other countries where her works are known.
In addition to her outstanding authorship, Brantemberg is known as a remarkable feminist and lesbian activist. She was instrumental in the founding of the Lesbian Movement in Denmark (1974) and Norway (1975).
