Born Patrick Califia, transgendered writer and former columnist for Out magazine, hir texts focus on lesbian, gay, and queer relationships in sexual scenarios that involve and celebrate power differentials. Califia's work is considered highly controversial within lesbian feminist circles.
It harks back to the butch-femme relationships and is associated in particular with pre-Stonnewall lesbian circles. Califia's writing emerged in the 1980s as part of the new celebration of sexual diversity in lesbian, gay and queer circles. Sie lives in San Francisco. Sie used to be Patricia, now is Patrick, used to be a lesbian, now is MTF, and identifies as transgender & as gay man.
