Michael Camille
(March 6, 1958 - April 26, 2002) South Africa
Art historian
Camille was bor in an Anglo-French parentage. He won a scholarship from his local grammar school to Peterhouse, Cambridge. He began to study English but then switched to art history. In 1980 he obtained a starred first and stayed at Peterhouse to study for his doctorate which he completed in 1985. He was then awarded a research fellowship at Clare Hall.
He moved to Chicago where he remained for the rest of his career. He showed a new approach to the study of medieval art and his work had a profound influence on other scholars.
Camille died of brain cancer at the age of 44. He was survived by his companion if 16 years, Stuart Michaels.
