Bob Cant is born in Dundee, Scotland but has spent over half his life living in London. He is a member of gay movement since 1971. He has been a leading activist in the university and college lecturers' union, NATFHE. He now working as an academic researcher at London South Bank University where his special area of interest is gay men's social networks.

He has written for Gay Left, Outcome, Socialist Worker, College Rank and File, Socialist Review, Gay Marxist, Anti-Apartheid News, and Rouge. Co-editor of Radical Records: Thirty Years of Lesbian and Gay History,1957-1987, (1988). Editor of Footsteps and Witnesses: Lesbian and Gay Lifestories from Scotland, (1993), and Invented Identities? Lesbians and gay men talk about migration, (1997).
