Seth Chafetz is a 16.5 year resident of Birmingham. He graduated from Michigan State in 1984 with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. He coaches competitive figure skating at the Detroit Skating Club and coach National and International Gold medalists.

Seth first became interested in the city commission after addressing the commission following a one year battle with city hall over an issue in his neighborhood of which he was the spokesman for 5 households. The commission was not interested in hearing about neighborhood issues or were they willing to listen to his information. He eventually got their attention and was successful in gaining the commissions support and so they fixed the problem in his neighborhood-not the process was all wrong.

Seth stuck around continuing to go to city commission and planning board meetings to see why the city worked as it did, then successfully ran for the commission a year later with the simple philosophy that the commission exists to listen to information that is brought in front of them.

During his 4 years on the commission Seth has worked to show that he could be an important decision maker and a gentleman at the same time. They have managed development and its issues in their neighborhood, addressed ethics, trees, parks, infrastructure and traffic issues as well.

Seth also founded the Birmingham Yacht Club, a social organization for gay people and their friends for the greater Birmingham area.
