Cooper was the first female medical practitioner in Queensland and only the second in Australia, she was the first woman to be a consultant at any Australian hospital (Brisbane's Hospital for Sick Children) and the first to be awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
She and her companion Josephine Bedford lived together for more than sixty years and are buried together in Toowong cemetery in Brisbane, Australia.
