Born in Canton, Ohio, Craig, went to school in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Ohio State University, achieving his Bachelor's Degree in 1979. His community involvement began even earlier, when in 1970, at the age of 13, he organized a group of young people to clean up empty lots in the neighborhood in observance of the first Earth Day.

He was a writer and columnist for his school paper, winning a regional writing award in his senior year. During his college years, Craig volunteered with the National Organization for Women and other human rights groups. In 1980, he was elected as a Kennedy delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York City. He also served three years on the Board of the American Civil Liberties Union in Columbus in the early 80's. He was only 25 years old at the time.

He moved to Michigan in 1985 to direct the Michigan Organization for Human Rights. Since 1987 he has worked full time in public health in both government and not-for-profit agencies. Craig is the founder of Midwest Aids Prevention Project (MAPP) and has been with the agency since it began. He served as the Executive Director from 1988 through 1997 and is now serving as the CEO.

He is a High Risk Consultant for the Michigan Department of Community Health. He is a member of Ferndale, Michigan, city council (2000 - 2004). Craig Covey has lived and worked in Ferndale for the past nineteen years, and owns a home on West Breckenridge.
