Józef Czechowitz
(1903 - 1939) Poland
Poet and editor
Born in Lublin. His poetry has lyrical intensity, a living sense of landscape, an imaginative attitude opening at times ato the symbolism and surrealism, a simple and incisive style, a controlled melodic verse. Homoerotic traits are clearly visible in his lyrics.
His works include: Kamien (Stone, 1927), Dzien jak codzien (A day like others, 1930), Ballada z tamtej strony (Ballad from hereafter, 1932), W blyskawicy (In a lightning, 1936), and Nuta czlowiecza (Human note, 1939).
The poet's fascination with simple country boys was almost proverbial. One of the boys was so outraged by hostile reception of his friend's poems that he avenged the writer by breaking all the window panes in the building housing the editorial office of the journal which had published the critical review.
Czechowitz died during a German bombing of Lublin in 1939.
