Joy Damousi is professor of History and Head of the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She has published widely in the fields of feminist history, women's history, labour history and Australian cultural and intellectual history. Her recent publications include the prize-winning Freud in the Antipodes: A cultural history of psychoanalysis in Australia.
She is the founding Head of the University of Melbourne's newly formed School of Historical Studies, which takes in the Australian Centre, the Department of History, the Centre for Classics and Archaeology and the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation.
Professor Damousi was the University' Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2006 and before that Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts and Associate Dean in the School of Graduate Studies. Her interests as a cultural historian include feminist history, memory and emotions, and the history of psychoanalysis. She is a member of the Academy of Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences.
