Gabriele D'Annunzio
(1863 - 1938) Italy

Poet and politician
Bisexual poet, novelist and playwright. His first volume of poetry, Primo vere (Early Spring, 1879), was folloved by furter collections of verse, short stories, novels, and plays, such as La Gioconda (1898), which he wrote for the actress Eleonora Duse, and Francesca da Rimini (1902).
After serving in World War I, he led an expedition in 1919 to capture Fiume which he declared a "free State", and he held until 1921. He prepared the way for Fascism by his mystic nationalism, although he was on strained terms with Mussolini. In 1924 he was created, by the king Vittorio Emanuele III, Prince of Montenevoso.
