Educated in Llanelli, Oxford, and Cardiff where he did his PhD The Control of Disclosure: A Sociological Study of Networks and Gay Identity, (1984). Author of The Role of Disclosure in Coming out among Gay Men, (1992), pages 75-83 in "Modern Homosexualities".
He has also been active in gay politics. He lectured at South Bank Polytechnic, London, and then lectured at the University of Essex. From 1987 onwards he was Director of Project Sigma, the largest empirical investigation of the sexual behaviour of gay and bisexual men ever undertaken in the UK.
