James Baldwin considered Delaney his "spiritual father." Delaney raised in Knoxville, spent time in Harlem and Greenwich Village before moving to Paris. His portraits of Baldwin, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marian Anderson, and Duke Ellington are considered classics.
