(around 1590) Brazil
Sentenced for sodomy
In 1592, a woman named Felipa de Souza living in the Portuguese colony of Brazil was sentenced by the Roman Catholic Inquisition for the "nefarious and abominable crime of sodomy" after admitting that she had had sexual relations with other women. She was condemned to exile and was viciously whipped while walking the streets of Salvador to serve as an example to others.
