Daughter of the financier Necker. Banished from Paris by Napoleon in 1803, because of her advocacy of political freedom, she gathered round her at Coppet, on Lake geneva, men such as Schlegel and Byron. She wrote semi-autobiographical novels such as Delphine (1802) and Corinne (1807), and the critical work De l'Allemagne (1810) on german literature.
