Juanita Díaz-Cotto

Activist
Juanita is a Black lesbian, feminist, socialist, and activist in various progressive social movements. She is the author of Gender, Ethnicity, and the State: Latina and Latino Prison Politics and editor, under the pseudonym of Juanita Ramos of Compañeras: Latina Lesbians (An Anthology).
She is an Associate Professor of Sociology, Women's Studies, and Latin American and Caribbean Area Studies at the State University of New York at Binghamton. She is currently working on an edited book on Law, Power and Justice in Puerto Rico and on a book entitled Chicanas and the Criminal Justice System in California. She has also been filming for two video documentaries: one on black Women in Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
She has widely lectured on diverse issues related to: Latin American women (including lesbians) and People of Color in the United States; the Latina/o experience with the criminal justice system in the United States; multiculturalism; documentation and ethnographic work. She is available to speak on any of these topics.
