Born and raised in Cuba, René Vázquez Díaz was a successful marine engineer in Poland before seeking political asylum in Sweden to pursue his writing. Now one of the most celebrated translators of Swedish texts, Díaz has further distinguished himself as "the most brilliant writer of his generation, and one of the greatest Cuban writers of all time" (Miami Herald).
In 1994, Díaz convened the Encounter of Stockholm, a symposium of prominent Cuban writers discussing their cultural heritage and political situation. In The Island of Cundeamor, a group of exiles inhabit an illusory island, fantasizing about political and romantic fidelity.
