Diocles
(4th cent. BC?) Greece
Athenian hero

separator

Diocles was an Athenian who died in battle for the youth he loved. He was honored in Megara, as a noble instance of self-devotion for the object of his love, with games celebrated at the beginning of spring.

"His tomb was honored with the enagismata (offering sacrifices to the shadow of a deceased person) of heroes, and a yearly contest for skill in kissing formed part of his memorial celebration."

For an account of Diocles, you can read Aristotle, Politics, II. 9.
