Diocles
(4th cent. BC ?) Greece
Athenian hero
Diocles of Megara, to where he fled from Athens. He was known for his love of boys, and was killed in a battle as he was covering his loved one with his own shield. He was honored in Megara, as a noble instance of self-devotion for the object of his love, with games celebrated at the beginning of spring.
"His tomb was honored with the enagismata (offering sacrifices to the shadow of a deceased person) of heroes, and a yearly contest for skill in kissing formed part of his memorial celebration."
For an account of Diocles, you can read Aristotle, Politics, II. 9.
