President of the Foundation for Equal Families, a community organization that intervenes in legal challenges dealing with same-sex relationships and gay rights; she is a former military officer who was fired by the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989 for being a lesbian, and her successful court challenge against her dismissal led to the lifting of the ban against gays and lesbians in the Canadian military.
