Robert, of Flemington, NJ, competed in his first Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 on Romantico. He and his USET teammates finished in sixth place. Four years later in Seoul, Robert rode Federleicht and he and his teammates again finished sixth. In the last two Olympics, 1992 in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta, Robert helped the USET win team Bronze Medals. In Barcelona, Robert rode Lectron and in Atlanta, he competed on Metallic.
Robert was 1994 U.S. Olympic Committee Male Equestrian Athlete of the Year. He is a veteran of five Olympics (1984, 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2002). Robert has won more dressage honors than any other American competitor; the first U.S. dressage rider to compete in five Olympic Games, he was elected team captain by the U.S. Equestrian Team for the Sydney Olympic games.
He won a bronze medal in 1992, 1996 and at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, his third consecutive bronze medal of the past three Olympic games; he was also awarded the 1994 U.S. Olympic Committee Male Equestrian Athlete of the Year. He retired from the show ring after the 2000 Sydney Olympics, but has continued his active involvement in the sport by training horses and riders.
"I noted that the three males who won medals were all gay (two American and one Dutch). There was also at least one closeted lesbian. I can tell you that gays take part in the majority of sports. Both David Pichler and I were elected Team Captains for our sports and I sit on the Athletes Advisory Council to the USOC."
