Painter and engraver (self-portrait)
Born at Nuremberg, at age of 13 he drew a portrait of himself from the mirror, the first known self-portrait in the history of European art. His great intellectual power put him in line with the great Italian masters and their influence introduced a new solidity of forms into his basically Gothic style. He worked for the emperor Maximilian I, and in 1520 went to Nederlands, and became court painter to Charles V. He was a friend of Luther, and was greatly influenced by the Reformation.
