Wayne R. Dynes is Professor of Art History at Hunter College, City University of New York, where he has taught for twenty-five years. He received his B.A. from UCLA in 1956 and his Ph.D. from New York University in 1969.

His research interests combine the history of art with social issues. He has written a book on Palaces of Europe (1969), and coauthored a monograph on Hieronymus Bosch (with Neal Myers, 1987). He is currently completing a book on the origins of Abstract Art.

He conceived and edited a "first," the comprehensive The Encyclopedia of Homosexuality (two vols., 1990). With Stephen Donaldson, he edited the 13-volume Studies in Homosexuality (1992). These works have been created in the conviction that understanding of this controversial field is best advanced by avoiding the extremes of condemnation and advocacy.
