Born in Hertfordshire, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, with Sir Lennox Berkeley. On leaving the Academy he worked in music publishing firstly with Chester Music and later with Novello.

Michael J. EastonEaston migrated to Australia in 1982 where he established himself as a freelance composers for opera, concert and film and television. His music is published by G. Schirmer [New York] and much of his music is on C.D.

In 1998 NAXOS released a C.D. of his orchestral music, and by February 1999 it had sold a record number of copies. His wind music was featured at the National Flute Convention in Phoenix in August, 1998. His opera based on the E. M. Forster short story The Obelisk has become an international favorite and has received glowing praise from critics who particularly admire the sensitive but hilarious gay seduction scene.

He divides his time between Australia, U.K. and L.A. where he is currently engaged on a screen project. He is tipped to become one of the leading lights of post modernism.

His long time partner is the South African pianist Len Vorster.
