Of Huguenot descent, he was born at St Petersburg, and his workshops there and in Moscow were celebrated for the exquisite delicacy of their products, expecially the use of gold in different shades.
Among Fabergé's masterpieces was the series of jewelled Easter Eggs, the first of which was commissioned by Alexander III for the Czarina in 1884.
Rumor has that he was gay, and that he used to decorate his own testicles as a special treat for his coterie of man-servants...
