"The Flirtations"
(active 1987 - present) U.S.A.
Musical group
If there is one group that embodied the state of gay culture in the late 1980's and '90's, it was The Flirtations. The Flirtations gained international prominence in the late '80s as the only openly gay, positive a cappella group. They were formed in NYC by Jon Arterton and continued singing in about 12 different incarnations until 1997. It helped that they had tremendous voices and chose outstanding material. They appeared in the film Philadelphia, and on HBO, The Phil Donahue Show, Good Morning America, NightWatch, and National Public Radio. They release three CD's and toured all over the States, Canada and Europe.
