Originally from Brooklin, New York, Fries holds a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University. His verse appeared in two chapbooks before the pubbòication of the book-lenght collection Anesthesia (1996). He is also the author of the memoir Body, Remember (1996) and has edited Staring Back: The Disability Experience (1997), a collection of "nonfiction, poetry, action, and theatre" by thirty-seven writers who live with disabilities.
Fries writes about the experience of living and coping with a congenital disability, about being Jewish and gay, and about AiDS. Fries has taught at Goddard College.
