Marilyn Frye
(1941 - living) U.S.A.
Theorist and critic
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was brought up as the younger of two daughters in what she has described as "stable, traditional, (but remarkably non-violent), devoutly Christian family".
In 1963, she graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University and then completed her doctorate in Philosophy at Cornell University in 1969. She has lived in the Midwest, on both US coasts, and in Western Canada, and worked variously in a bookshop, a lesbian centre, and a small press before embrarking on a career as an academic.
For many years she has taught Philosophy and Women's Studies at Michigan State University. Frye had a great impact on feminist and lesbian thinking with her two volumes of essays, The Politics of Reality: Essays in Feminist Theory (1983) and Willful Virgin: Essays in Feminism (1992).
