Actress, translator and director, born in London, England. Her father Richard was of French descent and a minor poet. He was known as the leader of the "English Decadents". Her mother Julie Norregard was a Danish feminist journalist.

Eva le GallienneShe made her stage debut in 1914 at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. At the age of eighteen her mother took her to New York. They travelled to various parts of the United States before going back to Europe.

Returning to New York, Eva became a Broadway Star. She appeared in Arthur Richman's "Not So Long Ago" in 1920 and Ferenc Molnar's "Liliom" in 1921.

In Hollywood in 1918 she met the actress Alla Nazimova they had a tempestuous affair which ended because Eva could not stand Alla's jealousy. Next she began an affair that was to last five years. It was with Mercedes de Accosta. Mercedes wrote two plays for her but neither was successful. In 1927 Eva was involved with the married actress Josephine Hutchinson and when her husband divorced her; he named Eva as correspondent. It was a great scandal. Her next relationship was with theatre director Margaret Webster.

She rarely appeared in films or on television. But was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Resurrection" and at that time was the oldest person ever to be nominated. Her last television role was in a 1984 episode of "St. Elsewhere".

She died at the age of 92.
