George III
(1738 - 1820) U.K.
George III
King

King from 1760, when he succeeded his grandfather George II. Although bent on strengthening royal influence, his alleged domination of parliament by corrupt "King's friends" is a discredited Whig invention. George, as Prince of Wales, had a confidant and possibly a lover, in the Marquis of Bute.

George supported his ministers in a hard line towards the American colonies, and opponed Catholic emancipation and other reforma. Possibly suffering from porphyria (rare hereditary metabolic disorder), he had repeated attacks of insanity, permanent from 1811. He married princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
