Born in Chicago in 1927 his birth name was John Baker Gray. At 16 he was appearing in vaudeville. Later on Broadway he appeared in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". He wrote special material for people like Lana Turner and Tallulah Bankhead. Timothy wrote the songs for the musical "Make a Wish".

With Hugh Martin he wrote the musical "High Spirits". "High Spirits" was nominated for three Tony Awards. Best Author for a Musical; Best Composer and Lyricist and for music and lyrics that contributed to the nomination Best Musical.

Hugh Martin, at his death, wrote:

"You were the best writing partner I ever had, and working with you was emotional and visceral, a truly synergistic phenomenon. Looking back at the finished product, it is difficult at times to distinguish between your work and mine. The name Timothy Gray is not a household word. But in my personal Pantheon, it is a name that lights up the sky with laughter, lyricism and love"

Timothy's partner of 36 years, Carlo Thomas survived him.
