She was born in New York City, educated at Washington Square College of New York University, and holds a master's degree in English from Cornell University. In 1941 she married Leonard Grumbach. She had four daughters. They divorced in 1972.
Doris Grumbach lived with her life partner Sybil Pike, first in Washington DC, and now in Sargentville, Maine.
