Professor of philosophy
Hale received his B.A. in Philosophy from Pitzer College (1981) and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1985, 1988). After working in traditional analytic philosophy (metaphysics, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of science), he developed an interest in interdisciplinary transgender studies and activism in transgender communities.
The topics on which Hale is currently doing research include biomedical ethics and medical regulation of gender variance in the United States from 1979 to the present, transsexual autobiography, and Los Angeles/Southern California transgender history. In addition to teaching transgender studies, at California State University, Northridge, Dr. Hale teaches courses in critical reasoning, introduction to philosophy, philosophy and feminism, sexual ethics, and topics in contemporary philosophy.
