Christopher James Hampton
(1948 - living) U.K.
Christopher Hampton
Dramatist

Born in the Azores where his father was stationed as an engineer. The first few years of his life were spent in a variety of locations, dependent on his father's postings, which included Aden and Egypt. Hampton was sent back to England to attend boarding school, initially a prep school in Reigate, then Lancing College, where he had his first sexual experiences, which were mostly homosexual.

Hampton began both writing and acting while he was at Lancing (1959-63), but he had his break.through when he went to Oxford (1964-68), where he studied French and German. There he wrote When Did You Last See My Mother? and Total Eclipse, both treating homosexual themes.

In 1971 Hampton married Laura d'Holesch with whom he had two daughters. Since his early engagement with homosexuality, he has become a mainstream, "straight" playwright.
