In June 1978, during Gay Pride Week in her hometown of Houston, Annella Harrison went before the City Council, declared "I am the parent of a gay child," and set about organizing a support group for other Houston parents of LGBTs.
After participating in the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in October 1979, Harrison met with a group of about one hundred other parents, including Jeanne and Morty Manford, that formed the core network of what ultimately became Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).
Annella Harrison served as Honorary Grand Marshal of Houston's Pride Parade in 1995.
