Born in Aurora, Ohio, one of four children - she has a brother and two sisters. Her father Don, a choir director, died at 45 of AIDS in 1983. Anne studied at Ocean City High School, Ocean City, NJ. She had a 2 year relationship with Steve Martin. Before "coming out" she dated her former AW co-stars Richard Burgi and David Forsyth.
 After her coming-out on her relationship with actress Ellen Degeneres, started in 1997, it became more difficult for her to get work. The studio bosses behind Six Days, Seven nights wondered if she was able to play a hetero!
In 1999 Anne announced that she intended to marry Ellen DeGeneres if Vermont carried through its plans to legalize gay marriages. Butin August 2000 she split with her partner Ellen DeGeneres after being together for 3 1/2 years.
In 2001 Anne married to cameraman Coleman Laffoon, and on March 2, 2002 she gave birth in Los Angeles to her son Homer, a 7 pound boy. In July 2002 Anne and Coleman were staring in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Proof" on Broadway.
