Heyman founded, owned and operated Key West's renowned Gingerbread Square Gallery at 903 Duval Street. There is a Mexican Restaurant and bar in the building today. The original gallery was an oddly arranged series of rooms, its wall hung with works by artists John Kiraly, Sal Salinero, Anne Irvine, Donna Hayes and Henry Faulkner.
In 1979 he was elected mayor of Key West. Heyman was the first openly gay elected mayor in the United States. Heyman was again elected mayor in a landslide election in 1983. Heyman's victory was front page news across the country. After completing two terms as mayor, he retired from politics. Heyman, died of AIDS related complications.
