Lida Gustava Heymann

Radical feminist and memoirist
Lida Gustava Heymann was born in Hamburg, the daughter of a wealthy senator and enjoyed a good upbringing and education. She was a teacher in a school for the poor and established her own sewing-school.
After the death of her father - and the inheritance of his fortune - she opened a cheap restaurant for working women, a daycare center for girls and boys, and a reform school. She also studied History, Political Science, and Political Economics in Berlin and Munich, but was only accepted as a guest.
Together with her work and life companion, Anita Augspurg, Lida Gustava was engaged in every area of life and politics. Across all of Europe, she worked for the woman's right to vote and for peace. She was against the trade of women, and for prostitution rights. However, after Hitler took over Germany, they went into exile to Zürich and had to rely on the help of their friends. Lida died in Zürich.
