Thorn Kief Hillsbery
(? - living) U.S.A.
Kief Hillsbery
Novelist

Born in Portland, Oregon, and raised in a mill town on the Columbia river, Kief ran away from home to see the Sex Pistols at Winterland in San Francisco. He climbed Mount St. Helens before it erupted and received his degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia after conducting independent research in the mountains of Nepal and working for a year as a teacher at Yosemite Institute.

While living in Yosemite's Camp 4 for rock climbers, Kief published his first feature atricles in "Mountain Gazette", and after moving to the Carmel coast, he became a columnist and contributing editor for Outside, where he reported on snowboarding and mountain biking when both sports were largely unknown.

After traveling worldwide, Kief settled in Southern California. He wrote feature articles for "Rolling Stone" and other American magazines before becoming Director of University Communications at UC Santa Barbara. His critically acclaimed first novels SkateBoy (2000), and War boy (2001), were published by William Morrow/Harper Collins, in the UK by Picador, and in German, Spanish, and Catalan translation. His last book is What We Do Is Secret (2004).
