Daryl Hine
(1936 - living) Canada
Daryl Hine
Poet

Born in British Columbia, Canada, Hine attended McGill University in Montréal before moving to the USA in 1967 where he has lived ever since. Hine traveled widely in Europe before going to the University of Chicago in 1967. Besides his poetry, he also wrote a novel and a travel account.

He taught Classics at the University of Chicago for several years, and both classics and Catholicism helped him deal with his sexuality. In 1975 he brought out an autobiography of his early years in verse, In & Out, which articulated his homosexuality and the difficulties he had in dealing with that.

Since 1975 his poetry has dealt more explicitly with the issue of growing up gay in the 1940s and 1950s.
